I wrote about Ryanair recently on a couple of postings down, and it seems like their charasmatic CEO Michael O’Leary is at it again on a free publicity mission!! This time O’Leary has said that the airline may consider starting to charge passengers £1 to use the toilet on board the aircraft. Ryanair seem to be wanting to drive revenue through every opportunity in addition to the initial outlay of the actual flight cost, or are they seeing this as an excellent free PR opportunity?! Michael O’Leary is very well known for this and I think this may well be the case.
The downside to all of this is that people may eventually become fed up with hearing about all these things that the airline may do.
With this there becomes an opportunity for compeititors in Europe to take advantage. Competitors such as EasyJet, Aer Lingus and British Airways can start to show their exceptional service as a source of competitive advantage and, despite a small cost premium, will be able to work on gaining custom from Ryanair.
