Haiti – the treatment in hospitals

I am totally shocked by what is happening in Haiti, but at the same time i understand why. I have just read in the morning paper that patients in hospitals are having treatment with very little being given in terms of anaesthetics for pain relief. Instead patients are having to bite bits of wood between their teeth as a means to get through the pain, which may include having limbs amputated to prevent spread of gangrene.

The hospitals are so full that some amputation operations are taking place outside in the gardens of hospitals. Surgeons are performing up to 25 operations a day. The incredible thing is that the surgeons, doctors and nurses are performing their jobs under a great amount of pressure and emotional feeling.
